HAVING A MOMENT [OF REDISCOVERY]
I recently returned to San Juan, Puerto Rico, a place I last visited in my early 20’s. San Juan didn’t make an impression on me the first time, as I left feeling like I read the Cliff’s Notes to an important classic and as a result don’t understand any of the references.
I only have myself to blame. San Juan is there to woo, only if you allow him to, and this time I fell in love. The same things that unimpressed me previously only won me over this time around. My friend and I made the decision to stop making decisions on this trip - no plans, no itineraries, no lofty sightseeing goals. That non-decision led us to quiet pockets of beach in between heavily populated resort areas, an old dive bar with its history written on the walls, and the warmest locals you could encounter as a tourist.
Our laziness open mindedness definitely paid off, and I can see why so many U.S. transplants now call this place home. They came in search of old world charm, and San Juan swept them off their feet.
